What is your take on this subject: Gender Neutrality in Toys

I am a geek. I prefer things that are different than "mainstream" (whatever that means anymore!) I like video games, Sci-Fi, Fantasy, MMORPGs (if you know what that is you are a geek too!!)

Anyway you get the point. I would rather go to the renaissance faire than the mall. I am also currently designing the castle that I hope we can move into one day. That is not a metaphor for a big house, I want a literal castle.

So I am a reader of Geekmom . This week however seems to be a slam fest on Disney Princesses. While I am a big geek and usually enjoy their articles, this one I did not enjoy at all and even find myself angry about it.

I have three girls the oldest of which just turned 5 last November. The 5 year old is very girly, loves pink and anything that has a crown on! The 3 almost 4 year old loves all toys and really doesn't show a preference to anything except tea parties. The youngest turned 1 in September and she has only shown a preference to baby dolls, giving them bottles etc. NOW.....I have many girly toys, pink, frilly, ruffles glitter and sparkly etc. HOWEVER, we also have buses, cars, match box cars and tools. The middle one likes tools and cars, the oldest does too but the preference is the girl toys. I have even remarked to my husband before that the oldest one kinda skipped over the whole baby doll thing and went right into Princess stuff, Disney or otherwise. The middle one loves the tea party and organizing things, especially tiny things. The youngest makes everything into a baby, stuffed animals and all, and likes to feed them and hug them.

I also watch a little boy the same age as my youngest. He plays with all the baby toys and the girl toys, but he plays with them differently than my girls do. You wanna know why? Because he is a boy not a girl.

At what point in time did it become a crime to like girly things if you are a girl? How is it not OK to like the princesses and to dream of those things? Why can't my girls watch Cinderella and be happy? I really HATE and yes I said HATE when people try to tell me to give my girls positive, strong, independent role models. You wanna know why? Because their role models aren't the Disney Princesses or Princess Fiona or Miley Cyrus. Their role models will be me and their grandmas, aunts and cousins. I don't think that the toys they play with now will make them believe that a prince will come rescue them someday, or even that they need rescuing, that is for us as parents to help them learn about, NOT the Disney Princesses!

I am a traditional person and unlike a lot of people I recognize the fact that men and women have different roles to play in the family. I also recognize that some of those roles are the traditional "1950" roles that a lot of people want to get rid of! I can not stand when a woman tells me that she can't cook and that her husband will just have to get over it. WHAT THE HECK!?! If a man ever said that to a woman she would go insane and call every friend she knows and probably beat the crap out of him. How would you feel if your husband told you that? How about if you are moving and he says he can't carry the heavy stuff and that you will just have to get over it?!

Personally for me the traditional roles fit our house. I keep the house, we do the bills together and we both cook. My husband works and I stay home with the kids. This doesn't make me feel like less of a person, or less of a female. It makes me feel good actually and I am tired of women telling me that I shouldn't feel this way because its a traditional role or a gender role etc. There are just some things that women are better at then men and vice versa and once people can accept that then maybe all this garbage about boy toys and girl toys will stop.

If you are a female and you like boy stuff, great wonderful good for you. If you are a female and you like girl stuff, great wonderful good for you. It doesn't make you any less a girl to like boy stuff or girl stuff, you are still a girl no matter what.

We do lots of art projects, coloring, painting, and crafty things. We go to a Christmas Eve service, drive around looking at Christmas lights, this year we are going to walk downtown and look at the store windows.

Monopoly!! That was a HUGE part of our Christmas every year, in fact so huge that my brother still collects Monopoly items.

6. What holiday tradition have you carried on from your own childhood?

Coloring lots of Christmas pictures the month before Christmas, Christmas Eve candlelight service. One gift on Christmas Eve.

7. Where would you go for a Christmas-away-from-home trip?

Rag Dolls

OK so I made some of these a long time ago and I think they are very cute. You can read the original post here. What I am wondering is will these things sell? Or is the market too flooded for rag dolls? I will be making one of these for my youngest for Christmas. Just wondering what the odds are of them selling and if you think they would, what would you charge?

Turkey Dress

So my idea came from here but I didn't use the template. Actually I didn't follow these directions either. I just saw it and made up my own thing. I did use the template here for the skirt, although next time I make a circle skirt I will own a serger because ironing and hemming a circle skirt is next to impossible.

Countdown to Harry Potter!!

We are about 10 days from Harry Potter 7.1!! I can't wait! I have been a fan since about 2001. I have read all of the books about 10 times each and have all of the movies. I even dressed up as Professor Trewlaney for the book release party for book 7!

Not exact but close, while walking in someone yelled out "They can't make you leave Trewlaney!"

I thought that was awesome!

Anyway, in celebration of movie 7 part one coming out I made a tiny display on one of my built in shelves.

I have more stuff, but it is all in storage in NC. =( I will make a much larger display when part 2 comes out next summer.

Thanksgiving Turkey From The Graphics Fairy

I am slowly getting the Thanksgiving stuff up, most of it is still in storage in NC (thats another story). So I printed out a very cool turkey from the Graphics Fairy. If you haven't been to this blog, stop what you are doing and go immediately!!

Isn't her site soooo cool?!? So I printed out the turkey, but I only have a black and white printer so I colored it with my awesome Prismacolor colored pencils. These things are amazing, they blend kinda like crayons, but they are very expensive. These are from when I was in art school back in 2002.

So anyway here is the turkey

Hello Kitty Treat Bag Challenge

I took on my first challenge! This Misfit Crafter had a contest to see who can come up with a Hello Kitty treat bag using the bag that she provided. Here are my results

If I used this design I would do the same on both sides. The ribbon at the top already had the little eyelet thingys. I cut the strip out of the bag because there was a logo there. A strip of plastic could go behind it, or maybe some Hello Kitty paper, or just leave it open and see the tissue paper in the bag.

If I had this design I would do the same thing on both sides as well, but I would leave the name off of one of the sides. Any kind of sparkly ribbon can be used on the top of the bag. I thought a little bling was in order!

This is the side which has a logo on it, I covered it with a sharpie, but strips of paper would work too. I just saw it close up and realized how bad it looks! Maybe strips of paper would be better, they are darker and you can make them straight. I would do this on both sides and with both designs.

If one of my designs is chosen I will win some cool prizes. If I win it will be the first blog candy I have ever won! Wish me luck!

Halloween costumes

This year was a cool year for costumes, I didn't make my girls costumes but I did make a really cool hat for my step-daughter. She went as a vampire and I thought she looked pretty cool!

This is C with her "victim" I actually made the costume that the victim is wearing too, we were going for the same "era" as the vamp

My three went in store bought costumes this year, maybe next year I will be on the ball!

I thought these were cool, all I did was get a white candle, light a red candle and drip the wax on the white candle, looks like blood dripping down the white candle. Simple yet pretty cool, well I think so at least! LOL

I found an ad on craigslist in late August for a sewing table. When I emailed to ask how much they said just come get it! I was like WOO HOO! So I went and picked it up, the guy said that if no one had responded to their ad he was going to chop it up and use it for the furnace this winter!! I was glad I answered the ad.

OK so since entering the world of blogs, I have wanted to quilt. Seems everywhere I turn someone else has a quilt on their blog. Problem: I am a sewer but I have never done a quilt. There are NO shops that give classes locally (I live in a TINY town). So does anyone know where I could find out how to make a quilt? Anyone have any good websites, books etc?

Posting a picture of a quilt that one of my friends made, it is AMAZING!! Love the color choices, this is the kind of quilt I want to make!

Garage Sale Finds!

So I finally got to go to a garage sale this last weekend. I think I did pretty good!

All of this was $26, not pictured is 2 Wii games!!

Pictured and priced as so:

Large frame with "art" $2, Large candle sticks $1 a pair, Glass canisters $1 each, ceramic wreaths $1 each, hair bows .25 cents a pair, glass pumpkin $3, Large glass Halloween bowl $3, brand new unopened box of wipes $1, Large Pampered Chef stainless steel bowl with lid $10, 2 Wii games not pictured, $5 and $3.

So if you add it up its more than $26. The canisters, candle sticks and frame came from one sale total of $6. Everything else was from one other sale and she said $20 for everything!! I was like DEAL! Awesome!!! I will show what I did to the candle sticks, canisters and Large "art" in a later post!

Random Thoughts

I have 2 followers which is awesome!!! I of course would like more one day, just for fun though. I know some people end up making money from blogging and that's cool, that would be a nice perk, but I don't see myself getting to do that. Several reasons are that one I'm not "mainstream", meaning I don't follow trends. Seems a big trend right now is white and muted colors, all accessories being the same color etc. I am just not into it at all! The other thing is the kids rooms having no toys in them. If you are lucky enough to have a play room that is awesome!!! I had one at our NC house. I want my kids to be kids and have fun, so my girls have powerpuff bedding and curtains, and strawberry shortcake bedding, they will not be little like this for long and I want them to enjoy their rooms. When they are older then we can do pretty bedding and matching accessories, until then bring on the strawberry shortcake, tinkerbell, Disney princess, powerpuff girl room!!

Disclaimer: if you like the white trend or the accessories all being one color, or you cringe at the idea of powerpuff girl curtains, it's ok, we can still be friends! Seriously though, these are my opinions only and not an attack on the newest blog trends, just my .02 worth!!!

The Dollar Store Bandwagon

Well I am jumping on, or rather stating that I am on...I have always shopped at the dollar store, in fact most of my Christmas stocking stuff comes from there! So here is my dollar store fall wreath!

To make it stand up I put a box inside the container and stuffed plastic bags around it till it was firm, then cut a circle of cardboard and hot glued it to the top of the box that was inside the container. That way if I want to make a Christmas container thingy I can just take out the pumpkin one and pop in a Christmas thing!

I just got all teary eyed looking at someone else's Disney pictures so I thought I would post some here. It is my hope and prayer that we get to take our 3 girls back to Disney World before my oldest is 6. That gives us about a year or so. I would love for them to all see the princesses and the fairies. Plus I love Disney!! Here are a few pics of when we went to WDW in 2006. M1 was only about 9 months at the time!

I was looking over the pics that I had taken so far that day and I was getting mad because in every single picture J would not smile. I don't mean just not smile he would put a frown on his face for every picture. Well, the cast member in the picture above heard me telling J that he needs to smile more and as I clicked this picture he put his fingers up behind his head! It was awesome and really made all of us laugh!!

Halloween stuff from over the years

Halloween is fast becoming one of my favorite holidays. As a kid we never really did anything for Halloween, maybe thats why I like it so much now. I love the colors, the costumes, the candy!! Here are a few things I have done over the years.

I made this wreath using cheap ribbon from the dollar store. I made the Happy Halloween sign and the ghosts and bat from Sculpey. That stuff is AWESOME!

The treat jack-o-lanterns are made from formula cans. I saved a TON of them and spray painted them orange. I used sharpie to color a big white label then cut out the faces for the pumpkins. Since they are made from cardboard I could easily poke a hole in the dies and make a pipe cleaner handle. Tissue paper in the bucket and some treats and its a cute Halloween treat for the kids.

This year my local dollar store was going out of business so all their Halloween stuff was half off or less! It was amazing! So I made some treat trays and treat buckets for family.

Printed the labels for some treats and made some candy wrappers for large chocolate bars, also made some coloring books.

In 2007 we had a huge Halloween party. Here are some pictures of the decorations and food.

I posted old school crafting here, so I thought I would post some of the newer things I have made. Mind you some of this is still about 7 years old, but its still newer than this.

This is an outfit I did for my then 2 year old. We went to a pumpkin farm and I wanted something cute for her to wear. I made one for my 7 month old also.

My attempt at a Belle dress but with different material. The trim was wired edged ribbon that I got at the dollar store many years ago. I just pulled the wire out and sewed it on.

Its kinda hard to tell in this pic, but I made all three outfits, cloaks, wench dress and all! It was fun, this was the cheap version of the witches from

Hocus Pocus

Thats me as Sally from The Nightmare Before Christmas. My co-worker Laura was Jack. I made my dress and wig, it was not easy!

Here's Laura again, all dressed for the Renaissance Faire. I made her dress from an Elizabethan costume pattern. Cost about 100$ and took me 40 hours!! This was a long time ago, wonder if I can do one is less time?

Here is mine, I didn't make the dress but I added the sleeves and the under skirt. Also made the head piece. Wish I had better pictures.

Here is another group of Ren Faire goers, the dress on the left was a revamp, just cut it up the middle and added an under dress, the one in the middle I made from a pattern, the monk did his own thing!

We went to the Harry Potter Book Release Party, we put together the costumes from Goodwill, and I made the cloak for "Ginny" and altered a trench coat for "Draco". My husband carved the wands. We also made the ties for each respective house and added the house emblems to the robes.

I went as Trelawney. I only hemmed the skirt, everything was either already owned or bought at Goodwill!

This was the last year that my co-worker Laura and I got to dress for Halloween, we are a good fairy and a bad fairy. I made both of these costumes from scratch, the "corsets" are from a pattern. We put our heads together and came up with these.

I know its kind of grainy, its a paper photo and I took a picture of it with my iPhone so that I didn't have to mess with the scanner, yeah I'm lazy like that!

Doll Making

I love rag dolls. I had some Raggedy Ann dolls when I was little (no clue where they are now). So I decided to make some dolls for all the little girls in my life. At the time there were 8 that number has gotten larger over the years. Here was the first set of dolls I made back in 2003

The pattern was photo-copied for my by one of my co-workers.

I need to find my other dolls, to this day I have made about 20 of these dolls for gifts. Time to make some for me!

Doll Wardrobe

I was at my favorite place in our new town....Good Will!

They had this really ugly little doll wardrobe, which I assume someone used for makeup or jewelry. I have no before picture but you can imagine wood and not the pretty color, but more of a yellowish color. Here is the only before picture I have its after I painted the wood white.

Since moving here to PA I have discovered an AMAZING thrift store, it is packed to the rafters, literally!

The place is called Little Hearts they don't have a website so I linked a map to their name. There is also a phone number. Anyway I have gotten some cool stuff there like this.

Well I wanted to share what I got there a couple weeks ago and how much I spent.

(because I am a dork like that)

So thats 4 pairs of shoes a bunch of pants, outfits, shirts a skirt and some PJs all for 50$!!!! Having three girls is expensive so I am thrilled with this store!

I also found this there for 20$ with 20% off!! It was stuffed with furniture and 4 dolls!!

Santa will be giving this to one of the girls for Christmas!

So having recently moved to this area, I have found that the Goodwill here is WAY cheaper than the one that was closest to me back in NC. So I go there often.

You can't tell (or maybe you can) but these are plastic and they were UGLY! I of course didn't get a good before pic because I was too excited to make them pretty.

(although I am having a slight issue with the paint not sticking, its the Krylon plastic paint and it just scrapes off, any tips would be great!)

So since reading all these blogs and seeing the amazing things that people are doing with furniture, I decided to jump on the DIY band wagon. I have always done these types of things, but there was never a name for it.

Here is one of my favorite finds so far

Our local thrift store has a TON of stuff, I found this very cute hutch kid size for $40, but then it was 20% off so I got it for $32!!!!

This thing is REAL wood people. I know, I kinda cringed when I decided to paint it and not stain it, but little girls don't like wood colors, they want PINK!

So this is blogging..... I really don't have much to say. I plan to use this blog for crafty things, DIY and kid stuff. I have found so many blogs that have such great ideas and cool things that I wanted to get in on the action. We have recently moved into a house that we are updating (a little). We are renting so we dont want to do anything to expensive. The changes will be my first postings. I don't know if I will have any readers or not but if I do......... Welcome!!!!
